Litho-Perf Standard Rules
H.S. Boyd rules for paper have rule heights of .017 inch to .021 inch and are effective for use with:

  • All bond papers
  • Carbonless paper
  • Offset weights up to 60-pound

Litho-Perf Rules for Card
H.S. Boyd rules for card stock have a rule height of .024 inch and are effective for:

  • 90-pound and 110-pound index weight
  • 65-pound cover weight
  • 70-pound offset weight and higher

Multiple factors affect the choice of the appropriate rule for any job: type or brand of paper, type of press, experience of the press operator, and application techniques. However, these guidelines offer basic criteria for making job-to-job decisions.

Perf Tearing

  • 12-16 TPI – "medium" to "very hard to tear." Possibly need to fold before tearing. Ideal for mailings and other applications that require a lot of handling.
  • 8 TPI – "medium" to "easy to tear." Stocks above 8 pt. will almost fall apart after folding.
  • 6 TPI and lower – "very easy to tear." Stocks above 8 pt. will almost fall apart after folding.
  • Normal perf (3–16 TPI) tear harder with a higher count of TPI
  • Micro perf (30-50 TPI) tear easier with a higher count of TPI

Special Low & High Rules
Rule heights as low as .0125 inch to as high as .035 inch are available. Generally, the lower rule heights work well on lightweight stocks, with the higher rules effective for:

  • 67-pound vellum
  • 10- to 12-point stocks
  • 80-pound cover stock

Micro-Perforation
Rule heights from .022 inch to .029 inch allow the Micro-Perf rules to be effective for:

  • All bond papers up to 60-pound offset
  • Carbonless paper
  • 80-pound cover stock
  • 10- to 12-point card stock

Scoring Rules for Paper
H. S. Boyd Scoring Rules have a rule height of .0155 inch and are effective for all paper weight stock

Scoring Rules for Card
Card-stock scoring rules with a rule height of.024 inch are suggested for:

  • All coated stocks up to 10- to 12-points
  • Enamel stocks
  • Cast-coated paper
  • 80-pound cover stocks

These scoring rules are specifically designed to decrease the likelihood and amount of cracking associated with scoring on most coated and heavy enamel stocks.

Special Low & High Scoring
H.S. Boyd scoring rules are available from .0125 inch to as high as .029 inch. Generally, the lower rule heights work well on lightweight stocks, with the higher rules effective for:

  • Coated paper above 12-point
  • Heavier enamel or cast-coated stock
  • Heavier cover stocks
